Naga Women’s Union condemns murder of Lucy Marem, calls for justice

Senapati, 17 July: Naga Women’s Union vehemently denounced the cold blooded murder of a Maring Naga woman at a place in Sawombung in Imphal East district by the Meiteis.

In a press statement condemning the brutal murder, Asha Wungnam president, Naga Women’s Union stated that Lucy Marem Maring of Narum (Beaulahram) Village, Chandel District was an active member of Maring Napuiya Yinglam (Maring Women’s Union) and a constituent unit of Naga Women’s Union. The condemnation mentioned that the victim was forcefully apprehended by the Meira Paibis, whom the NWU considered were their friends in torch bearer of Peace. Sources said that she was handed over to the Arambai Tenggol (a private militia ruling the valley now) and was mercilessly murdered despite identifying her as Maring Naga tribe.

Naga Women’s Union (NWU) stated that it has been wholeheartedly advocating for peace to be restored in the state since the inception of the ongoing communal clashes. The two warring communities were repeatedly appealed and pleaded not to escalate the situation however despite our courtesy and concern shown towards humanity by the NWU and Nagas as a whole whereas, their appeals were taken for granted and their concerns were considered as threat.

NWU president, Asha Wungnam stated that its Union has been traumatized many a times due to the recent riots between Kukis and Meiteis in the state because, its own Union members were touched and called the victims in different incidents recorded. The Union will not tolerate nor forget such barbaric action committed upon the Nagas, she mentioned. The concern authority or group must initiate that Justice must be brought to the innocent soul within the given time frame of patience. Adding fuel to the burning flame is never encouraged, she lamented.
