Manipur police arrests 9 accused in Maring Naga woman murder case; 19 others arrested over torching of 3 trucks at Sekmai

Imphal: Manipur police said it has arrested 9 persons in connection with the murder of Lucy Marem, a Maring Naga woman at Keibi Heikakmapal Maning Ching in Imphal East district (Ukhrul road) on July 15.

Police said that out of the 9 arrested 5 are women, including two arms — one 303 rifle and 9mm country made pistol — and five ammunitions and one car were also seized.

“Imphal East District Police in connection with the incident in which one woman was found dead at Keibi Heikakmapal Maning Ching on July 15, two arms, five ammunitions and one car were seized in connection with the case,” said Manipur police.

Superintendent of police Imphal East in a press briefing late Sunday evening gave out the identities of the 9 accused arrested. Two accused, namely Konsam Naocha and Okram Samungou who were arrested in possession of the two seized weapons also confessed of their role in committing the crime.

The nine arrested are namely: Konsam Naocha Singh (43) of Huidrom Mayai Leikai; Okram Samungou Meitei (38) of Heikakmapal; Ongam Suraj (27) of Keibi Heikak Mapal; Ahanthem Sobita (61) of Sawombung Maning Leikai; Thounaojam Chingkheinganba Meetei (25) of Sawombung block; Thounaojam Lata Devi (63) of Sawombung Block; Ayekpam Ashalata Devi (56) and Ahanthem Ito Devi (50) of Sawombung gate; Ngasepam Sunita (42) of Sagolband Tera.

Speaking to media, the Village Authority, Meira Paibis and Clubs of Keibi Heikakmapal Maning Chingin in Imphal East district while strongly condemned the killing of Lucy Marem, it profusely asked for forgiveness from the Maring Naga tribe for the crime committed. They informed that three accused from the village have been ex-communicated from the village for life.  

Meanwhile, Manipur police have arrested 19 people in connection with the arson and torching of 3 trucks at Awang Sekmai Mayai Leikai Lampak, Imphal West on Saturday by Imphal West District police.

A police source said that the trucks were used to transport LPG cylinders and the miscreants set on fire today, around 10:30 am.

All the 19 accused were produced before the Duty Magistrate Imphal West on Sunday and 17 accused were remanded in police custody for four days, and 2 were referred to Juvenile Justice Board, while raids are continuing to arrest other accused person, said Manipur police.
