Wung Tangkhul Region Destroyed 12.445 kg of Opium

Ukhrul: Wung Tangkhul Region (WTR) seized and destroyed 12.445 kg of opium at its office on Tuesday in the presence of Tangkhul CSOs leaders, church leaders and WTR staffs.

According to a press release issued by the Under Secretary, WTR, GPRN “On 15 January 2024, Wung Tangkhul Region (WTR) Office received a report from reliable sources that trading of opium is about to take place at Khamasom Phungthar Village. Accordingly, WTR officers raided the house and seized 12.445 kg of opium worth approximately Rs. 440000. The seized drugs were disposed off on 16 January 2024 at 1:00pm at WTR Office in the presence of Civil Society leaders, church leaders and WTR staffs.

“Wung Tangkhul Region will not tolerate illicit drug trafficking of any kind. Serious actions will be initiated against those indulging in such destructive business activities,” the press release stated.

On 29 Novembe 2023, WTR had issued a press statement stating that “cultivation/plantation of poppy is strictly banned/prohibited in the Wung Tangkhul Region with immediate effect. Noncompliance of the order shall be treated as wilful defiance, which will result in stern action as deemed fit.”
