Poly Makan, MCS, ADM Ukhrul and Ngamreiwung Luithui, MCS, SDO LM Block attended the inaugural event which aimed to promote local fish production and highlight the potential of fisheries as a sustainable livelihood option in the district.
In his presidential address, Homhor Zimik, President of UDFFA, emphasised the importance of strengthening the fisheries sector for community well-being. “As long as farmers are growing and prospering through your support, our community will have nutritious and fresh foods that enhance our health. Together, we can build a better tomorrow,” he said.
Zimik recalled how the idea of forming the UDFFA began with a discussion with the District Fishery Officer on 29 September 2023, leading to the creation of the association to support and unify fish farmers across Ukhrul and Kamjong. He also announced several upcoming projects, including the setting up of a mini fish feed mill, biofloc fish culture, fish kiosk with cold storage, and a freshwater fish hatchery in the twin districts.
“The fishery sector holds immense potential to boost our local economy,” Zimik stated, adding that despite setbacks such as the loss of fish seeds due to floods and landslides last year, the association remains determined. “The greatest loss in life is not death but giving up while still alive,” he remarked.
The UDFFA currently comprises 27 farmers, while the Mapithel Fish Farmers’ Society includes 60 members.
