UKHRUL/IMPHAL: At least three people were killed and several others injured after CRPF personnel opened fire during a protest at Tronglaobi in Bishnupur district on Monday.

The incident occurred at Tronglaobi Maning in the Gelmon area, where a large number of people had gathered outside a CRPF camp, protesting the recent attack that killed two minor siblings by suspected Kuki militants and left their mother critically injured.

Eyewitnesses said the crowd, angered by the incident, accused security forces of sheltering armed groups and attempted to storm the camp. The situation quickly turned chaotic, with reports of damage to barracks and vehicles inside the camp.

As the confrontation escalated, CRPF personnel opened fire to disperse the crowd. At least three persons were killed on the spot, while several others were injured.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals in private vehicles and ambulances. Some of the critically injured have been referred to Imphal. The exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed.

Tension remained high in the area at the time of filing this report, with more people continuing to gather nearby.

Meanwhile, the Tronglaobi blast has triggered widespread protests across the state.

In Moirang, large groups assembled at the police station, while roads were blocked and tyres set on fire in protest. Demonstrations were also reported from Pangei and Mantripukhri in Imphal East, as well as from Lilong and along Tiddim Road, including Hodam Leirak.

Protesters demanded justice for the victims, as normal life was disrupted in several areas.

Agitators also blocked traffic along major routes in Imphal city, including Checkon, Keishamthong, Kwakeithel, Singjamei and Khurai, allowing only emergency services to pass.
