UKHRUL: The Working Committee of the United Naga Council (WC, UNC) has raised concerns over the unceasing and unprovoked attacks on the Naga villages by Kuki militants under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement. In light of this, the committee has placed several demands on the government.
In a press statement issued today, the UNC stated that it has been keenly observing the unceasing and unprovoked attacks on the Naga villages, including Litan, Sinakeithei, Shangkhai, Sarkarphung, and Thoyee, in Ukhrul District. The attacks by the Kuki militants under SoO, using sophisticated weapons, have caused panic and unrest among the villagers, raising serious concerns.

“It is indeed shocking to learn the indiscriminate firing on the Nagas by Kuki militants in the evening of Easter, April 5, 2026, from 6-11 pm, defiling the solemnity and sanctity of the holy Easter and leaving villagers in panic, is abominable and unacceptable in the Christian domain,” the UNC said. It stated that the attack that hit six residential buildings was a clear example of the Kuki militants’ continued aggression against the Naga people.
“Despite the Naga village guards’ restraint, the Kuki militants have been orchestrating a proxy war against the Nagas suspiciously under the patronization of the state machineries,” the UNC committee said, adding, “The UNC is appalled by the inaction and complacency of the state and central governments, which is seen as a step-motherly treatment towards the Nagas.”
The UNC Working Committee questions the government on the prolonged road blockade enforced by the Kukis along the National Highway leading to Ukhrul. “How and why the government could not tackle or ensure the safe passage for all travelers in that short stretch of about 3 Kms when the state has been hosting the highest ever number of security forces in its history?” the UNC Committee queried.

Further, the committee alleges that the SoO groups violated the ground rules, besides waging war openly right under the nose of the armed forces. “The rationale behind the alarming government’s policy in letting loose the Kuki militants to wage war on the Naga people should be questioned by all right-thinking citizens in the country. This raises serious concerns about the government’s role in protecting its citizens, putting the lives and properties of Nagas at stake,” it noted.
The UNC asserts that it has been advocating for peaceful coexistence, but continued provocations in the ancestral domains of the Nagas have offended the Nagas beyond the extreme. Also, it reminded everyone that ‘A threat to one Naga on the issue of land and identity is a threat to all the Nagas’. Our patience and restraint should not be misconstrued as weakness by all concerns, it said.
Moreover, the Working Committee of the UNC has labelled the press statement issued by the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, accusing Rev. Ramyothing Phungshok, Pastor of Sinakeithei Baptist, of hate speech as completely unfounded and one-sided.

“The former has merely echoed the sentiments of the Naga youngsters, and his statements were devoid of any inflammatory tone. Such acts of intimidation and targeting individuals will not silence the voices of the Naga people,” it said.
The UNC WC then places several key demands, including immediate action against the Kuki militants under the SoO groups for terrorizing the Naga villagers; increased security measures for the affected villages by deployment of state forces; Ensure safety and security for all travelers along the highways, especially, NH-202 Imphal to Ukhrul; and Accountability for the state and central governments’ inaction and malicious policy.
The WC, UNC will continue to work towards the rights and dignity of the Naga people and will not hesitate to take necessary actions to protect our people and our land at any cost, it concluded.
