35,000 Homes Damaged, 1.6 lakh Affected in Manipur Floods

Imphal, June 5: According to a report from the Directorate of Relief and Disaster Management, as of 5:30 pm on Thursday, the flood in Manipur has affected 706 localities and a total population of 1,65,936. One person died, four were injured, and 35,384 houses were damaged in this flood. The disaster also killed 74 animals, destroyed 161.65 hectares of crops, and damaged 71 public infrastructures. A total of 160 landslides were reported.

Of the 82 relief camps set up, 78 are operational. Additionally, eight medical relief camps have been opened to assist those in need.

Meanwhile, the Imphal, Sagolmang road via Pangei has been cut off at Khurai Heikru Makhong in Imphal East after the Imphal River breached its left bank due to heavy flooding in the state.

The floodwaters from the breach destroyed a culvert on the road at Ipum Pat, Heikru Makhong, completely disrupting road connectivity in the area.

MD Yunus Ahmed, Chairperson of the Kairang-Khomidok Gram Panchayat, told the media on Thursday that the Imphal–Sagolmang via Pangei road is a vital route for residents on both sides, including the Muslim community of Kairang-Khomidok.

He said flash floods triggered by continuous rainfall since May 31 have severely affected the state, especially Imphal East district. He thanked local MLA L. Susindro Meitei, also known as Yaima, for providing essential support, including excavators, relief materials, and food for the flood-affected people. He praised the MLA for actively participating in flood control efforts.

Yunus added that Susindro’s timely response would help the Muslim community prepare for the upcoming Eid al-Adha festival, which falls on June 17.

Repair work on the damaged road is currently underway under the MLA’s supervision.
