3rd Naga Indigenous Wrestling Meet Concludes at Senapati

Senapati, Oct 16: The Indian Army successfully organized the 3rd Edition of the Sep K Ashuli, Vir Chakra (Posthumous) Naga Indigenous Wrestling Championship 2025 at Senapati, Manipur, from 14 to 16 October 2025. The event witnessed overwhelming participation from young wrestlers aged 10 to 20 years, competing across three weight categories.

The three-day championship celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the Naga community and promoted the values of discipline, strength, and sportsmanship among the youth. Enthusiastic crowds comprising local residents, community leaders, and dignitaries cheered the spirited bouts, which showcased exceptional skill and determination.

Terming it a great honour to be present at the 3rd Edition of the Sep K Ashuli, Vir Chakra (Posthumous) Naga Indigenous Wrestling Championship — a celebration of rich culture and sporting spirit — the Commander of 59 Mountain Brigade appreciated the President and Secretary of the Senapati District Wrestling Association, Manipur, for facilitating the 57 Mountain Division in conducting the popular sporting event. Such platforms, he noted, unite the community, inspire the youth, and preserve proud traditions.

“In today’s changing world, events like this remind us of the importance of tradition and culture. Naga wrestling is not just a sport — it reflects strength, discipline, identity, and values that continue to guide and define the Naga people,” he said.

“The Indian Army has always supported sports and culture in the North-East, providing training, facilities, and opportunities for youth to showcase their talent. Through initiatives like Operation Sadbhavana, the Army promotes cultural understanding and strengthens civil-military bonds while highlighting the region’s rich heritage,” the Brigade Commander added.

Recognizing the youth as custodians of culture, the Indian Army continues to empower them through sports tournaments, scholarships, and skill development initiatives, nurturing confidence, discipline, and pride in their roots.

At the conclusion, the senior Army officer congratulated all the athletes for their hard work and sportsmanship, stating, “The wrestlers represent not only physical strength but also the cultural spirit of the Naga people.” On behalf of the Red Shield Division and the Indian Army, the Brigade Commander expressed honour in being part of the noble event and wished the championship greater success in the years ahead.

In the under 55 kg category, Ava Hrai clinched the Gold Medal, while Rahavei secured Silver. In the 55–65 kg category, Veikho Dule earned Gold and Michael bagged Silver. In the above 65 kg category, Hriikhelou was crowned Gold Medalist, with Joyland as Runner-up. The winners received a cheque of ₹50,000 each, while the runners-up were awarded ₹40,000, along with medals and certificates during the closing ceremony.

Senior officers from the Indian Army graced the occasion, felicitated the winners, and commended all participants for their dedication. The championship was widely appreciated by the local populace and highlighted the Indian Army’s continued efforts to promote indigenous sports, foster youth engagement, and strengthen its bond with the people of Manipur.
