Ukhrul: The 5th Winter Open Basketball Tournament 2022 organized by Wilders Club began on Friday at Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Hungpung Ukhrul.
In this three day tournament from December 16 to 18, 2022, a total of 9 teams participated in the tournament from around Manipur. Lynx, CYLC A, CYLC B, Ball is life, St Anthony participated from Imphal, Hunphun Hoopers, Vikings, Brothers from Ukhrul and Lamka Hoopers from CCpur.
Ngachonmi Thingshung, Chairman Wilders Club says that this year, participants from Ukhrul have reduced in number. Last year there were 5 teams from Ukhrul but only three teams showed up this year. He also said that due to the poor condition of Basaketbal courts, the players seem to have reduced in number. “Playing basketball and other sports will help the youth divert their mind from indulging in intoxicants and drugs. We are in need of proper sports facilities, especially Basketball court, so that athletes will have a better platform as well,” he mentioned.

There are only 3 functional Basketball courts in Ukhrul. There is one in scared Heart school, another one in Savio School and one in St Joseph’s. There is also one in Bakshi ground but is in pathetic condition.
The Chief Guest of the tournament, Maibam Suranjoy Singh, MCS SDO Ukhrul, said that Football and Badminton have been indulged in Ukhrul long back but Basketball is rare. He applauded the Wilders club for organizing tournaments like this. He then wished his best to all the players and asked them to give their best.

Maibam Suranjoy Singh, MCS SDO Ukhrul, Sorokhaibam Koroungamba, CAF, PD Inspector 45 Chingai AC, Father Joseph, Assistant Parish Priest Sacred Heart Ukhrul, members of UDBA and UDWJA were present in the opening.
There will be Women’s Exhibition match between Manipur Women Basketball Team and Wilders Club today.
The final match will also be played between CYLC A and CYLC B.
