Imphal: Amid the talks of some sitting MLAs of the party leaving the party to join BJP, leaders of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) rushed to New Delhi on Monday.
MPCC president N Loken is currently camping at the national capital. The Congress MLAs including former chief minister O Ibobi Singh who is also the leader of the Congress legislators left Imphal today to join him.
Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and former deputy chief minister Gaikhangam and some MLAs also left Imphal by separate flights.
Sources in the MPCC said that they rushed to Delhi to discuss strategies for the upcoming elections to the state Assembly.
The 60-seat Manipur Legislative Assembly will go to poll by early part of next year, most probably in February and March.
The sources said that MPCC leaders will hold a meeting with top leaders of AICC including its president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi and discuss the strategies of the party for the upcoming elections.
Talking to reporters at Imphal Airport before leaving for the national capitals, Congress’s lone woman legislator, AK Mirabai Devi denied more sitting party MLAs including herself joining the BJP.
The MLA said that she would not leave the Congress. She claimed that the Congress party has the finest ideology. She further said that she has been associating with the Congress party for the last 40 years.There has been speculation that more Congress MLAs will join the BJP.
“Do not believe in such propaganda. We are not joining the BJP. We are not frogs. How can we leave such a party (Congress) having its own princiiple and ideology?” she asked.
She observed that only those who have no integrity of their own switch from one party to another.
Mirabai expressed her strong confidence of the Congress party returning to power after the next elections.
“The Congress party will return to power after the 2022 elections. The Congress party is all set to defeat the BJP”, she added.
