Imphal: Business activities in major markets in flood-affected Imphal have started resuming in a very small way from today, even as the water logging issue still prevails in many areas.
Business activities in the major markets in the Manipur capital including Paona Bazar, Thangal Bazar and Khwairamband Keithel including the iconic all-women-run markets have been severely affected since the areas were inundated by flood water.
The repairing of the breached embankments coupled with receding of the water levels of rivers including Imphal River has stopped overflowing water from rivers.
However, water logging prevails in most of the flooded areas including the major markets forcing residents to stay at relief camps as their areas are unsafe for residents to return to their homes.
Meanwhile, various organisations, clubs and individuals have been rendering help-services to the flood affected people, They have been providing whatever things they can give to the residents of the flood affected people. Bottled drinking water, pulses, potatoes, rice and old clothes to the needy people in the flood affected areas and relief camps.
Meanwhile, Manipur Chemists and Druggists Association (MCDA) today estimated that drugs worth over Rs 15 crore was lost as almost around 95% of the drugs at stock were damaged in the flood as almost all the drug stores in Imphal were inundated.
Talking to the reporters, MCDA secretary Thokchom Dwijamani said that the devastating flash flood that submerged most parts of Imphal valley has resulted in the loss of over 95% of the medicine stocks at various pharmaceutical wholesalers and retailers in Imphal.
Dijamani revealed that most of the drug stores are located within the flood affected Imphal areas and they have got no chance to shift the medicines at stock to safer places.
He, however, said that the public need not panic despite the significant loss as the association is trying at its best to ensure the availability of medicines.
At the same time, he added that problems prevail while transporting the drugs due to the landslides at various places on both the national highways – NH-37 and NH-2.
He then demanded compensation from the government.
