IMPHAL (CM’S SECRETARIAT): Manipur chief minister yumnam khemchand singh on Wednesday congratulated star weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu after she won silver in the women’s 48 kg category at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 in Japan.
Khemchand interacted with Mirabai through video conference from the Civil Secretariat at Mantripukhri and said her achievement had made both India and Manipur proud.
He praised her hard work, discipline and perseverance, saying her success would inspire young sportspersons, particularly the youth of Manipur.

“The people of Manipur stand with her,” Khemchand said, adding that the state government would continue to support sportspersons and promote sports in the state.
Mirabai lifted 87 kg in the snatch and 111 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 198 kg to secure the silver at the Nagoya City Trade and Industry Centre.
The medal marks Mirabai’s first Asian Games medal and India’s first medal in the women’s 48 kg category since karnam malleswari won bronze at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games.
Mirabai told the chief minister that she was happy to see the people of Manipur supporting her and standing by her.
Secretary, Youth Affairs and Sports, naorem praveen singh said work on the Mirabai Weightlifting Academy was progressing.
Home Minister govindas konthoujam, Art and Culture Minister kh. loken singh and konthoujam MLA dr. sapam ranjan singh also congratulated Mirabai during the interaction.
