Ukhrul: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has condemned the recent abduction of an employee from the Military Engineering Services (MES) at the Army cantonment in Leimakhong, while expressing its full support for the ongoing search and rescue operations by the concerned authorities. However, the committee has raised concerns over the imposition of road restrictions in the area, calling the measures “regrettable.”

In a press statement issued today, CoTU, highlighted the ongoing tensions between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, which have escalated since the outbreak of violence in May 2023.
The press release claims that since May 3, 2023, the Kuki-Zo community have been evicted out from the Imphal valley by the Meitei community. This has resulted in a geographical divide, with the Kuki-Zo residing in the hills and the Meitei community confined to the valley.

According to CoTU, “…it is prudent to have security protection from unabated attacks or ambushed by the valley based Meitei militants throughout the road connectivity between all hill areas and not restriction on the road route.”
In protest against the Army’s restrictions, CoTU has called for a 12-hour shutdown across Kangpokpi district on Saturday, November 30, from 4 AM to 4 PM. The shutdown aims to express their resentment towards the restrictions and demand unrestricted movement for the Kuki-Zo community.
