Ukhrul, April 9: The Department of Social Work, Don Bosco College (Autonomous), Maram, organized a series of events and activities under the theme “Social Work: Compassion + Action” to commemorate Social Work Month.

Highlighting the significance of social responsibility, empathy, and community service, the month-long observation saw enthusiastic participation from students across all semesters. Activities were carefully curated to reflect the core values of social work and to foster a sense of civic engagement among youth.

The celebration commenced with a Cleanliness Drive aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sanitation. This was followed by a stage play performed by 6th-semester students on International Social Work Day, creatively depicting real-world social issues and the transformative role of professional social workers.

A PowerPoint Presentation (PPT) Competition was also held, challenging students to visually articulate pressing social concerns and intervention strategies. The department also joined hands with the Women’s Cell and the Department of Education to observe International Women’s Day, featuring talks, cultural performances, and interactive sessions that celebrated women’s achievements and addressed gender-based challenges.

Another highlight was a student-led Awareness Program by the 6th semester, addressing topics ranging from mental health to community development. As part of their Extension Activity, students engaged with local communities, providing support, education, and resources. Adding a reflective dimension to the month, the department held an Appreciation and Gratitude Day, celebrating the contributions of faculty, staff, and peers.

The Literary Day featured an essay writing competition centered around contemporary social issues, sparking critical thinking and articulation among participants.

An innovative Class Exchange Program allowed students to teach and learn from one another on various social themes, promoting peer learning and collaborative understanding. Meanwhile, the 2nd semester performed a mime on the theme “Save Forest—Save the Climate.” Moreover, students took to the streets with impactful street plays, forming three different groups to spread messages on drug abuse, climate change, plastic use, and water conservation. The 4th semester conducted Soft Skill Classes, equipping peers with essential skills in communication, teamwork, and leadership—crucial traits for aspiring social workers.

The grand finale of the month-long observation was a National Seminar on the theme “Education and Skill Development: Pathways for Children and Youth Empowerment,” which brought together scholars, practitioners, and students from across the country. The seminar served as a platform for meaningful dialogue on emerging trends in social work practice and research, reinforcing the department’s commitment to academic excellence and community engagement.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Evergreat Wanglar, Head of the Department, remarked, “This month is not just a celebration but a call to action. Through these initiatives, our students not only learn but live the values of social work.”

The Social Work Month at Don Bosco College Maram successfully encapsulated the spirit of Compassion + Action, leaving a lasting impact on the college community and beyond.
