Ukhrul: Parents and students of Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) Ukhrul held a sit in protest at Gandhi Chowk, Phungreitang on Monday.

Extension of school holiday has greatly affected the students’ academic life which led to the sit in protest. The parents and students of KV appeals the concerned authority not to waste their study cycle by randomly extending summer holiday.

The parents informed that normally, the summer holiday was due to end on June 17, although because of the prevailing situation in Manipur, KVS initially extended the holiday till July 3. Then it was extended for the 2nd time till July 27.

“This is the 3rd time Kendriya Vidyalaya has extended the summer break in Manipur whereas classes are in full swing all over India since the first part of June”, said a concerned father.

“Extension of holidays randomly is affecting the career of the students. It is our request not to extend the holiday anymore. Extending of holiday repeatedly will have negative impact on the discipline and academic career of 400 plus students of this Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan”, requested HA Leishiwon, a parent.

The parents are anxious that the academic life of students will be affected. “I am worried that the children will pick up bad habits since they are at the curious age”, said Y Khaleng.

“We want to study, we don’t want extended summer break”, protested KVS students.

Students held placards that said, “I miss my school and friends”, “Please don’t ban our education”, “We want resumption of class”, “Vacation extension equals education denied”.

Extension of summer holiday is affecting our studies, said Mansak, Class 11 student, KVS.

The Parents Support Group (PSG), KVS submitted a memorandum to the Minister Human Resource Development (HRD) Govt. Of India through the Deputy Commissioner, Ukhrul and the Chairman, VMC Kendriya Vidyalaya Ukhrul requested and reminded again not to extend the summer vacation further.

The Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Parents Support Group & the Chairman, VMC, KV Ukhrul (Deputy Commissioner, Ukhrul, Govt. of Manipur) have been requesting and reminding the commissioner – KVS, New Delhi and Regional office, Tinsukia region Authority not to extend holiday considering the plight of the students for ensuring quality education, as mentioned in the memorandum.

Considering the situation is normal in Ukhrul and public transport running as usual, there will be no issue for the teachers to reach Ukhrul from Imphal.

They strongly felt that the right to education for the rural students have been blatantly denied by the Commissioner-KVS, New Delhi Govt. of India. Therefore, allow KV-Ukhrul to re-open, they demended. They also appealed to exclude the unaffected areas of the state from declaring blanket holiday across the school of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Manipur in the future.

The pandemic had badly affected studies of the students. The ongoing conflict in Manipur has further exasperated student’s academic cycle across the state.
