First-Ever Yacht in Meghalaya Launches at Umiam Lake

Shillong, June 4: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today launched Meghalinor, the state’s first sailing yacht, at Umiam Lake in the presence of Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, Commissioner & Secretary of Tourism Vijay Kumar D, and Director of Tourism C.V. Diengdoh.

Speaking at the launch, the Chief Minister said that the introduction of the yacht is significant as it brings together two critical sectors, Tourism and Sports for a broader impact.

“Whether it is in tourism or sports, we have goals, targets, and plans, and a larger vision of creating livelihood and employment opportunities, with the youth at the center of what we do. Today’s programme is the coming together of all these efforts,” he added.

Highlighting that nearly 50 percent of Meghalaya’s population is under the age of 20, the Chief Minister stressed the need for strategic planning to cater to the aspirations of the younger generation. “We must lay the right foundations today to provide them with opportunities in the years to come,” he said.

He further noted that Umiam Lake has yet to reach its full potential. The government, he said, has initiated several interventions, including water sports and sailing along with efforts to improve infrastructure and develop the area into one of the best resorts in the eastern region of the country.

“Today’s small yet significant move will enhance the overall experience for our tourists but this is just the beginning,” he stated.
