Former Chief Justice W A Shishak passes away at 82

Ukhrul: Former Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh High Court, W A Shishak has passed away at 82. He passed away at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Imphal Thursday evening. W A Shishak was born in 1941 at Shangshak village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.

W A Shishak who was the first tribal Judge of an Indian High Court was the first Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh when the new state was formed in November 1, 2000. He served as the Chief Justice in Chhattisgarh from from December 5, 2000 till 15 January 15, 2002.

Former Chief Justice Shishak started his practice in Gauhati High Court in 1967 and shifted to Nagaland in 1970. He served as a Senior Government Advocate for the Government of Nagaland for 7 years and was the President of the Nagaland Bar Association. He became a judge of Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court and later the Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court in 2000 and Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2002. He retired on January 1, 2003.

W A Shishak was a fervent advocate of the issue of Human rights Violations. He was also one of the strongest critics of the excesses committed by the Indian Army during the 1988 operation Blue Star at Oinam Village.

In his inaugural speech as the Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh in 2000, W A Shishak had said, “Do what you say. If we do some thing else than we say, then people will not trust us and if people lose trust then in my humble opinion nothing remains in judiciary as, after all, judiciary is constructed entirely upon the solid foundation of confidence of the people. I would not care if people say that I am not a learned man, but I would feel if anybody accused me of partiality.”

W A Shishak is survived by his wife and son.
