India says Manipur situation an ‘Internal Matter’; in touch with EU Parliamentarians

New Delhi: Over the European Union Parliamentarians to deliberate on a resolution during its ongoing plenary session to debate human rights breaches in the Northeast state of Manipur roiled in ethnic conflict in the EU Parliament on July 12-13, New Delhi has said that it has reached out to EU parliamentarians.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra briefing media in the capital said, “On the Manipur question, this is a matter totally internal to India. We are aware of what in Brussels Parliament is happening. We have reached out to the concerned EU Parliamentarians. We have made it clear that this [Manipur crisis] is a matter totally internal to India.”

India in a similar circumstances over Manipur turmoil recently pushed back US ambassador Eric Garcetti’s comment on Manipur where he had said the United States is ready to help Manipur if asked upon while interacting with students on his visit to Kolkata on July 6. The US envoy’s comment drew a sharp response from Indian National Congress (INC) leader Manish Tewari as well. The opposition leader remarked that Garcetti’s comment was perhaps the first time he heard a US envoy comment of such nature.

The news of EU’s deliberation on Manipur came as a surprise in India right on the eve of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France to participate in the French National Day celebrations.

PM Modi is scheduled to depart for France on July 13 for his visits to France, followed by a visit to UAE. The Indian Prime Minister is participating the France’s Bastille Day celebrations on July 14 at the invitation of France President Emmanuel Macron — A large tri-services contingent from India will also participate in the Bastille Day Parade.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra further said that this would be the Prime Minister’s 6th visit to France. Both PM Modi and President Macron met on the sidelines of the G7 summit in India. The two leaders have remained in very regular touch since they first met in June 2017.”

PM Modi will reach UAE on July 15 according to Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra.
