UKHRUL: Themsorin Hannah Ningshen is a young Tangkhul violinist, educator, and arts advocate from Phungyar Village in Ukhrul District, Manipur. Deeply rooted in her cultural heritage while pursuing excellence in Western classical music, her journey reflects dedication, perseverance, and a strong commitment to music education, youth empowerment, and artistic development.

Beginning her musical journey at the age of seven, Hannah has spent more than fifteen years pursuing and refining her musical education through extensive training in Shillong, New Delhi, and West Bengal. She holds a Grade 8 Certification in Violin from Trinity College London and has completed Music Theory certifications from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). In addition to the violin, she is proficient in piano and guitar, making her a versatile and accomplished young musician.

In May 2026, Hannah was selected to participate in the prestigious South Asian Symphony Foundation (SASF) Youth Workshop and Concert held in Bengaluru, India. Representing Manipur and Northeast India, she joined talented young musicians from across South Asia in an intensive residency focused on orchestral performance, ensemble training, artistic collaboration, and cultural exchange.

Throughout the residency, participants underwent rigorous orchestral rehearsals, sectional training, ensemble coaching, tutorials, and collaborative musical sessions under the guidance of internationally acclaimed mentors and members of the South Asian Symphony Orchestra (SASO).

The program provided a professional environment where young artists from diverse backgrounds learned the values of discipline, teamwork, leadership, and musical excellence.

The grand concert finale, held at the KE Auditorium, Christ University Central Campus, featured celebrated classical repertoire including Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, and Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. The performance received enthusiastic appreciation and a standing ovation from the audience, reflecting the dedication and artistic excellence of the participating musicians. One of the memorable highlights of the evening was the orchestra’s performance of the Tamil song Dingiri Dingale, which was warmly received by the audience and added a vibrant cultural dimension to the program.

Hannah’s participation in the SASF residency highlighted the growing presence of Western classical music and orchestral culture emerging from Northeast India. The experience provided valuable exposure to international standards of orchestral performance and strengthened her commitment to pursuing excellence in music while representing her region on larger platforms.

Alongside her musical accomplishments, Hannah has consistently excelled academically. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Sociology and a Master’s degree in Political Science. During her academic years, she actively participated in Model United Nations conferences, representing countries such as France and Egypt. Her dedication and leadership earned her Best Delegation awards, and she later served as Secretary General, helping organize and lead such conferences. She also participated in the Young Indians Youth Parliament, where she received an Honorable Mention for her contributions.

Driven by her passion for arts education and youth empowerment, Hannah founded the Hannah School of Arts in West Bengal’s Siliguri—an initiative dedicated to nurturing creativity, artistic excellence, and meaningful opportunities for young people through music and the arts.

Through this platform, she seeks to inspire young minds, cultivate talent, and create access to quality arts education for aspiring musicians.

As part of this vision, Hannah recently organized a charity recital aimed at encouraging greater youth participation in classical music and artistic development. The initiative reflected her belief that music should not only be a form of personal expression but also a powerful tool for education, leadership development, community engagement, and social impact.

Reflecting on her experience at the South Asian Symphony Foundation residency, Hannah describes the program as professionally enriching, transformative, and deeply inspiring. She believes that music serves as a universal language capable of connecting people beyond cultural, political, and geographical boundaries.

Looking toward the future, Hannah hopes to contribute to the growth of music education, youth orchestra culture, and artistic collaboration throughout Manipur and Northeast India. She envisions establishing sustainable arts initiatives that create opportunities for young musicians while promoting cultural exchange, leadership development, and creative career pathways.

Her long-term vision includes strengthening music education systems, developing youth orchestras and ensembles, organizing workshops and performances, fostering artistic collaborations, and building partnerships with national and international institutions, orchestras, cultural organizations, and artists around the world.

Despite limited institutional and financial support, Hannah continues to pursue advanced musical training and professional development through determination, discipline, faith, and personal commitment. Her journey stands as a testament to what can be achieved through perseverance, passion, and a willingness to dream beyond one’s circumstances.

Today, Ningshen represents a new generation of artists from Northeast India—one that seeks to bridge cultures, inspire communities, and create meaningful change through music and education.

Her story is not only one of personal achievement but also one of service, vision, and hope for the future of arts and culture in Manipur and beyond.
