JAC Demands immediate arrests of Ngangom Nevy’s Murderers

Imphal: Joint Action Committee formed against the killing of Ngangom Nevy, alias Yaiphaba has named one Thangboi Haokip as his killer. Speaking to media at Manipur Press Club on Thursday, JAC Convenor Aheibam Chanthoi demanded swift arrest of accused person and other culprits who were involved in the brutal murder of Nevy. She also demanded necessary compensation for his bereaved family.

Manipur police on Wednesday unearthed a decomposed body of a man suspected to be that of 19-year-old Ngangom Nevy who has been missing since May 2023. The body was retrieved from a drain at Sokom Village near Sugnu in Chandel District.

According to family members, clothes on the body matched with those last worn by Ng. Nevy from Sugnu Awang Mandop Leikai who went missing on May 28 last year at the peak of Manipur violence. Forensic experts are examining the mortal remains to confirm the identity, police said.

Notably, a video went viral on Tuesday on social media which shows a suspected armed Kuki-Zo man brutally slitting the throat of a young man in civilian cloth, bearing resemblance to Nevy. Family members of Ngangom Nevy then approached Sugnu Police station to locate the body. Subsequently, Police identified the location in the video and started a search hunt. A combined team of 37 Assam Rifles and Kakching District Police team led by Kakching District Additional SP Law and Order, A. Romendro, under the supervision of Kakching District SP Th. Vikramjit, along with family members of Ng Nevy visited Sokom Village on Wednesday morning and found the remains from a drain. Later, Sugnu Executive Magistrate and Forensic Experts arrived at the site and after necessary examination, the body was deposited at JNIMS Morgue.

Ngangom Nevy, Son of Ng. Sanakhomba is one among many missing persons in Manipur since the ethnic clash between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. Nevy went missing when armed miscreants attacked and torched houses of Meitei villagers in Serou and Sugnu areas, Kakching District. His family even performed his last rites without his body using a plank of Pangong tree as per Meitei customs for his eternal rest.
