Joujangtek Ambush: Calculated and coordinated attack on Nagas, says UNC; NNPG Condemns killing of TBA Leaders

UKHRUL: The Working Committee of the United Naga Council (UNC) has expressed deep outrage at the ambush of Naga civilians between Joujangtek and Longsai village, allegedly carried out by suspected Kuki militants. The UNC described the attack as a calculated and coordinated assault on the Naga people by warmongering marauders with unfounded claims and political ambitions.

The ambush resulted in the death of one Wilson Thanga (55), son of the late D. Waikan of Dolang Chiru Village, and left Olive Jatung (34) and Aroma Thanga (33) critically injured.

According to the UNC, on the evening of the incident, the victims were returning from funeral rites in Dolang Chiru village and were on their way to Leimatak fields around 5:30 PM when their vehicle came under sudden gunfire from the Joujangtek side of the road.

The UNC stated, “This incident is not an isolated case. It is a calculated and coordinated attack on the Naga people by warmongering marauders with unfounded claims and political ambitions. The Naga people view this incident seriously and shall not remain mute spectators to such continued aggressions.”

The UNC has made the following demands:

1. Immediate Justice: An immediate and impartial investigation to identify and arrest the assailants must be conducted in a time-bound manner.

2. Accountability: The Government of Manipur must be held accountable for the unfolding situations and take concrete steps toward restoring peace and stability.

3. Security: Deployment of state security forces along vulnerable routes and areas from the Loktak project to Noney in the Tamenglong district and other vulnerable areas of Naga territory to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

The UNC warned that any further delay in delivering tangible justice would signify a grave dereliction of the State’s duty. “This cycle of impunity must be addressed without delay, or the consequences for peace and order in Naga areas will be irreversible,” they emphasized. The UNC extended solidarity and heartfelt condolences to the Chiru people and the bereaved family of the late Wilson Thanga during this time of immense grief and loss.

Meanwhile, the Working Committee of the Naga National Political Group (NNPGs), led by N. Kitovi Zhimomi, has expressed shock at the heinous murder of Rev. V. Sitlhou and the Thadou Baptist Association (TBA) team on May 13, 2026, in Kangkokpi, Manipur.

“Although no group has claimed responsibility for this act, regardless of the identity of the perpetrators, this evil act is unfathomable and contradicts the core principles of communal harmony and peaceful coexistence. This extremely barbaric and wicked act will be remembered as one of the most undignified deeds committed against church leaders, who are the propagators of peace in the region,” said the NNPG.
