President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the 51st Chief Justice of India on Thursday. Justice Khanna is expected to take oath on November 11.
“The President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 11 November 2024,” said a notification issued by Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India on Thursday.
A graduate of Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre, Justice Khanna will succeed Chief Justice Dr D.Y. Chandrachud, who is set to retire on November 10.
Justice Khanna, elevated to the Supreme Court in January 2019, is due to retire on March 13, 2025, a tenure of just six months.
