Imphal: Normal flight services from the Imphal airport were disrupted on Sunday following the closure of the Kolkata airport, official sources said.

Flights are expected to resume on Monday after a 21-hour suspension as the Kolkata airport is expected to open the aerodrome on Monday at 9 am.

Flight operations at the Kolkata airport were suspended due to Cyclone Remal.

The closure of the aerodrome forced authorities at Imphal airport to cancel at least seven flights for the day.

The affected airlines were Indigo (IGO-7713/ 7947, IGO-6514/6716, IGO-7948/7155, IGO-275/6807) Air India (AI 734), Alliance Air (91731) and Air India Express (I5-9901/9902).

Meanwhile, the effect of Cyclone Remal is likely to be felt in Manipur starting from the night of Sunday till the next day (Monday), according to the MET report.

The cyclone will be at its maximum on Monday and is likely to affect the hill districts of Churachandpur and Pherzawl and its adjoining areas as per the latest MET report.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy downpours likely to drench the entire Northeast region for at least the next three days, beginning Sunday evening.

The weather department has also issued an Orange Alert for May 26, warning of heavy to very heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over Manipur and the rest of northeast states.
