Ukhrul: The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has expressed strong opposition to Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s proposed journey through Kangpokpi district on December 18, 2024. The Chief Minister is expected to attend “Robvena Ni,” a festival in Senapati, as the chief guest.

In a press statement, the KZC clarified that while it acknowledges and respects the celebration of Robvena Ni and does not oppose the Chief Minister’s participation in the festival, his travel plans through Kangpokpi by road are a matter of concern. The council has warned that such a move could provoke public unrest and potentially lead to attacks on the Chief Minister and his entourage.

The KZC accused the N. Biren Singh-led state government of perpetrating what it described as genocidal acts against the Kuki-Zo community, in alleged complicity with extremist groups. The council claimed that 19 months of violence had severely affected the community and accused the Chief Minister of playing a role in inciting attacks on the Kuki-Zo people.

Given the volatile situation, the council emphasized that the sentiments of the Kuki-Zo community remain highly charged. It stated that the Chief Minister’s travel through the Kuki-Zo-dominated Kangpokpi district at this time could aggravate tensions.  Meanwhile, the KZC has advised the Chief Minister to cancel his proposed journey through Kangpokpi and suggested alternative routes in the interest of maintaining peace between communities. The council also warned that any breach of the buffer zones could lead to stern action from the Kuki-Zo people and asserted that any untoward incidents arising from such actions would be the sole responsibility of the state government.
