Senapati, Jan 10: Maj Bob Khathing football tournament commenced at Astro Turf Ground, Senapati with 16 teams. The event was organised by the Red Shield Division of the Indian Army in collaboration with the Senapati District Olympic Association, Manipur.

The inaugural function was graced by a senior Indian Army officer, 59 Mountain brigade, Senapati as the chief guest in the presence of different rank and files of the Red Shield Division, Indian Army, Officials of the Senapati District Olympic Association, Manipur and District Sports Association, Senapati.

Speaking as the chief guest, the senior Indian Army officer stated that there are men and there are legends. The name of Maj. Bob Khathing is written in Golden Letters in the history of India. Born in 1912 in Ukhrul, he joined the British Indian Army who was later promoted to the rank of local captain in Victor Force and fought with honour against the Japanese in Burma.
For his bravery on the battlefield, he was awarded the Military Cross and Member of the Order of British Empire. After independence, he joined the Assam Rifles and became the first officer to unfurl the tricolour flag in Tawang in 1951. Owing to his immense contribution to the North East, he was awarded Padma Shri in 1957. He was also the Indian Ambassador to Burma from 1972-75.

The army officer stated that the life of Maj Bob Khathing has shown the people that “Difficulty is an excuse which history never accepts. Life may be difficult but hard work, determination and perseverance always pay”. While wishing all the players the best of luck, the army officer advised the players to play hard, play fair and win friends; adding that it is not just about winning matches but building friendships and learning from each other.
A. Karang, President, District Sports Association, Senapati in his speech stated that it is with great honour that the people of the district will host the Maj. Bob Khathing Memorial Football Tournament 2024-25 at Astro Turf Football Ground, Senapati. The tournament is stated to be held in honour and loving memory of Maj. Ralengnao Khathing, popularly known as Maj Bob Khathing, whose contributions to the nation can never be forgotten.

As the people gather to pay tribute to the enduring legacy of Maj Bob Khathing whose passion, dedication, and selflessness for the nation inspired countless individuals and whose memory continues to motivate the to strive for excellence, the district sports association President expressed gratitude to the Red Shield Division for taking such initiative and trouble to organise the prestigious tournament at Senapati.
The President of the District Sports Association is confident that the young football enthusiasts of the district will benefit greatly from the tournament. Over the next 5 days, the tournament will witness thrilling matches, outstanding teamworks and individual brilliance on the field.

But this tournament is more than just a competition. It is a celebration, a testament to the power of sports to unite and inspire and a tribute to the memories that the people hold dear.
The first match was played between Zalengam FC versus David Memorial FC.
The tournament will culminate on January 15.
