Imphal, Apr 7: In a violent turn of events, the residence of Asker Ali Makakmayum, president of the BJP Minority Morcha, Manipur, was set on fire on Sunday night by a large group of individuals in Lilong, Thoubal district of Manipur.

The attack is believed to have been carried out by a Muslim mob, following Makakmayum’s support for the Waqf Bill.

The violence has significantly escalated tensions in the area, which has already been fraught with political and religious divisions.

Makakmayum, who had recently expressed his backing for the Waqf Bill on social media, found himself at the centre of a storm of controversy.

His endorsement of the bill sparked intense opposition from many Muslim groups, resulting in public outcry.

In the aftermath, the BJP leader reportedly received threats and intimidation, with calls for him to retract his statement.

The controversy deepened as videos surfaced showing the BJP leader apologising.

However, the response to the arson by firefighters was delayed due to road blockages set up by the mob at key points, including Lilong Kaleikhong Lou Tara and Turen Wangma.

Despite the Thoubal Fire Station being supported by the Mayang Imphal Fire Station, the fire tenders’ access was hindered by these barricades.

Police officers from Thoubal and Yairipok were called in to disperse the mob, but controlling the mob proved challenging, and the delay in response resulted in significant damage to the property.

In response to the escalating unrest, the district magistrate of Thoubal issued a prohibition order under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023, barring gatherings of five or more people within the Lilong Assembly Constituency.

Additionally, the order prohibits the carrying of deadly weapons or objects that could be used to cause harm. This measure was implemented to prevent further violence and to maintain peace in the region.
