Manipur observes Jana Neta Hijam Irawat Day; CM says CBI probe into students’ murder case progressing rapidly

Imphal: Manipur observed Jana Neta Hijam Irawat Day 2023, marking his 127th birth anniversary today. Chief minister Nongthombam Biren Singh led the dignitaries and officials in paying floral tributes at Hijam Irawat’s statue installed at Irawat Square, Lilashing Khongnangkhong, Thangmeiband in Imphal. Speaking on the sidelines, the chief minister appealed to the people of Manipur to remain calm and united amidst the ongoing crisis. He urged all indigenous communities in the state to come together to protect its territorial integrity and work towards restoring peaceful coexistence and brotherhood.

Chief minister Biren also announced that the government would cover the expenses for the treatment of all injured students involved in recent protests related to the abduction and murder of Hijam Linthoingambi and Phijam Hemanjit. Initial financial assistance of 50,000 rupees each has already been provided to severely injured students. He assured that an inquiry into the use of excessive force by security personnel during the recent protests by students is underway, and appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible. On a positive note, the chief minister mentioned that the CBI probe into the murder of the two students is progressing rapidly, and the culprits behind the heinous crime will be apprehended soon.

The observance of Jana Neta Hijam Irawat Day also saw the participation of transport minister Khasim Vashum, advocate general Lenin Hijam, MLA of Phungyar AC Leishiyo Keishing, chairman, Loktak Development Authority Moirangthem Asnikumar, chief secretary Dr Vineet Joshi, advisor (security) Kuldiep Singh, director general of police Rajiv Singh and senior government officials among others.
