Shillong: The Meghalaya SSA Schools’ Association (MSSASA) has urged the state government to reserve 70% of vacant teaching posts for in-service SSA teachers, as part of a comprehensive policy to address their grievances. This demand was among eight key suggestions submitted during a meeting chaired by Education Commissioner & Secretary Vijay Mantri on Monday.
The MSSASA emphasized amending the Meghalaya School Education Service Rules and proposed exemptions from the Meghalaya Teachers’ Eligibility Test (MTET) for SSA teachers who joined before 2010-11. They also suggested conducting a special TET for those who joined after 2011, highlighting their long service of over 20-25 years.

Other demands included maintaining the pupil-teacher ratio, extending pay structure benefits under the Meghalaya Service Revision of Pay Rules, 2018, and offering a one-time special package for retiring SSA teachers who lack pension benefits.
MSSASA President Aristotle Rymbai urged the government to expedite a policy for securing the services of over 13,000 SSA teachers, citing similar measures adopted by other states. The association also called for salary enhancements and compliance with the SSA programme’s five-year extension approved by the central government.
