Senapati: The Naga People’s Organisation (NPO), Senapati, has strongly appealed to the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) of Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi, to refrain from imposing sudden and frequent blockades on vehicular traffic carrying goods and passengers along National Highway-2 (NH-2).

In a press release the Naga organization stated that while it respects CoTU’s right to protest against perceived inaction or injustice by the State or Central Governments, such measures should not disrupt the welfare of the Nagas in the Senapati district. The NPO stressed the need for CoTU to ensure the rights, safety, and uninterrupted flow of traffic on NH-2.

The organization noted that sudden blockades and shutdowns frequently imposed by CoTU have caused significant hardships for the Nagas in Senapati district, who rely on NH-2 as their lifeline. As a social organization, the NPO acknowledged the complexity and sensitivity of the ongoing conflict in Manipur but stressed the importance of maintaining NH-2 as a “safe zone” for the free movement of goods, services, and passengers.

Additionally, the NPO called for urgent intervention by the State and Central Governments, pointing out that despite the heavy presence of security forces on NH-2, the route remains unsafe for the free movement of goods and passengers.
Looking forward to the New Year, the NPO urged a cooperative approach to resolving these issues and appealed to CoTU to act responsibly and considerately to ensure peaceful coexistence for all communities.

Meanwhile, the CoTU has announced the withdrawal of the indefinite economic blockade along NH-2 and the recurrent 24-hour total shutdown within Sadar Hills, effective from 2 AM. on January 5, 2025. The decision, CoTU says follows an understanding reached with the concerned authorities regarding the deployment of the 112th CRPF Battalion in fringe areas, particularly in the Saibol region under Lhungtin Sub-Division.

In a press release issued by CoTU on Saturday expressed its appreciation to the authorities for deploying the 112th CRPF Battalion in areas predominantly inhabited by the Kuki-Zo community. However, Kuki body in Kangpokpi cautioned that it might escalate its agitation if the remaining Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) deployed from the valley are not withdrawn from the affected regions within 48 hours of the blockade’s withdrawal.
