Naga Scholars’ Association Raises Concerns Over Irregularities in 147 Faculty Absorption Process

Published on

Ukhrul, April 14: The Naga Scholars’ Association has expressed deep concern and distress regarding the recent notification (Order No. THE/HE/134-3/2020(Pt-11), dated 8th April 2025) issued by the Under Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, which announced the approval of the absorption of 147 contractual faculty members from different government colleges into tenured Assistant Professor positions.

The NSA argued that while it fully recognise and respect the contributions and sacrifices of the contractual faculty in the academic landscape of Nagaland, it reiterated that any appointment to permanent teaching positions must be governed by fair, transparent, and merit-based recruitment processes. Upholding such standards is essential for maintaining the integrity and credibility of our higher education system.

The issuance of a subsequent notification on 10 April 2025, nullifying the earlier decision, suggests a lack of procedural clarity and highlights the need for greater administrative coherence and accountability. Such administrative ambiguity and ad hoc decision-making impacts public trust and faith in institutions responsible for shaping the future of education in the state, said NSA.

The Naga Scholars’ Association emphasised the importance of critical thinking, fairness, and ethical governance in education as it urged the Government of Nagaland to uphold transparency and due process in academic appointments, while also addressing the needs of contractual teachers.

The NSA calls for fair and equitable recruitment systems to ensure higher education institutions in Nagaland remain inclusive, excellent, and accountable.
