Imphal: With no tangible sign of unrest in Manipur state, a 55-year-old woman from the Maring Naga tribe, identified as one Lucy Marem (D/o Marim Thoukhal) was shot dead on Saturday evening at Sawombung, Imphal East. The deceased is said to be from Beaulahram village in Pallel in Chandel District.

PTI reported that the victim was shot dead at her residence by some armed men leaving her face disfigured before fleeing.

The murder of Lucy Marem (Maring) is the second such incident in the state roiled in ethnic clash between the Kuki-Zo and Meetei communities. Unidentified gunmen shot dead a middle aged woman named Donngaiching belonging to the Kuki-Zo tribe at Kwakeithel Mayaikoibi Mamang Leikai in Imphal West District on July 6 morning. Donngaiching was a mentally ill person who did not leave Imphal despite the prevailing ethnic violence said sources.
Manipur police has so far arrested four accused in the murder case of Lucy. A case has also been filed at Lamlai Police station for further investigation.

The four accused are identified as Konsam Naocha (43) of Huidrom Mayai Leikai; Ongam Suraj (27) of Keibi Heikak Mapal; Thounajam Lata of Sawombung; Ahanthem Subita of Sawombung Maning Leikai.
In another news, miscreants on Saturday torched three LPG ferrying trucks. The miscreants, according to locals, forcibly stopped the vehicles and took them to Sekmai Awang Leikai where they set fire the vehicles at around 10:30 am.

The current violent ethnic conflict between the Meetei/Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups since May 3 in Manipur state has displaced tens of thousands of people from both the communities and has claimed over 120 lives. The epicenter of the conflict in the state hills are Churachandpur and Kangpokpi Districts.
Of the 16 Districts in Manipur, 10 Districts are in the hills and 6 Districts (Kakching, Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur and Jiribam) are in the valley. Naga dominated hill Districts namely, Tamenglong, Noney, Chandel, Kamjong, Ukhrul, Senapati are largely unaffected by the prevailing conflict.
