KOHIMA: PM SHRI Government High School, New Market, Kohima on Thursday organised a programme to inaugurate several newly developed academic facilities within its campus. The event was attended by community members, school authorities and invited dignitaries.
The newly inaugurated facilities include an Atal Tinkering Lab, Science Laboratory, ICT/Computer Lab, Library Room and a Vocational Lab. These were formally inaugurated by Chief Guest Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, Advisor for School Education & SCERT.
Addressing the gathering, Yhome highlighted the vital role played by the local community in the development of the institution. He acknowledged contributions from the panchayat, School Management and Development Committee (SMDC), Gaon Buras (GBs) and well-wishers, noting that the school land, measuring approximately 24,000 sq. ft., was acquired through collective effort.

Referring to the school’s progress since its upgradation to High School in 2016, he observed a steady increase in enrolment, including students shifting from private institutions. However, he expressed concern over the continuing preference for private schools despite the availability of trained teachers and improved infrastructure in government institutions.
Emphasising the need for systemic reform, Yhome stated that the government is working towards establishing a School Standards Authority to regulate and improve the quality of both government and private schools. He informed that the education system is being redesigned around three key pillars; investment in infrastructure, improved governance, and strengthening of curriculum and pedagogy.
He further highlighted the introduction of mandatory in-service teacher training programmes and stressed that the focus must remain on students’ learning outcomes. “Children are our wealth,” he remarked.
Guest of Honour Tseilhoutuo Rhütso, MLA, also addressed the gathering and spoke on ongoing efforts to strengthen government schools so they become the preferred choice for parents. He noted that government school teachers are well-qualified and encouraged students to make effective use of the new facilities while adapting to evolving learning methods.

Special Guest Kevileno Angami, Commissioner & Secretary, School Education & SCERT, shared that Nagaland currently has 1,881 government schools and 813 private schools, with only about 40 percent of students enrolled in government institutions.
She emphasised the importance of community participation, better awareness of government initiatives, and maintaining a disciplined and positive school environment.
Earlier, SMDC Member Kenny Peseyie highlighted the historical legacy of the institution, stating that the school was established around 1933 as an Upper Primary School and has contributed to the education of many prominent citizens. He recalled key milestones, including infrastructure development under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan and the transition from a Kacha structure to a concrete building, eventually leading to its upgradation to a High School.
The programme also featured a welcome address by the SMDC Chairman, remarks from the New Market Area Panchayat, invocation, unveiling of facilities, rendition of the school anthem and a special number. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by an SMDC member, followed by light refreshments.
