Nagaland Prohibits Gau Dhwaj Yatra to Maintain Peace and Order

DIMAPUR, SEP 26: In an order issued by the commissioner of police and the district magistrate of Dimapur today, the Gau Dhwaj Yatra, (promotion of a ban on cow slaughter), has been prohibited in the districts of Dimapur, Chumoukedima and Niuland in Nagaland.

The order came in pursuance of the Nagaland State Government’s directive dated September 12, 2024, citing concerns over potential disturbances to public order.

The prohibition is further reinforced by the provisions contained in para (1) (a) (i) of Aticle 371(A) of the Constitution of India, which grants special safeguards to Nagaland, particularly in matters related to religious and social practices, the order said.
