UKHRUL: The NSCN-IM has strongly condemned the killing of two civilians in Ukhrul district on April 18, describing the incident as a “brutal act” allegedly carried out by Kuki Suspension of Operation cadres.
In a statement issued by its Ministry of Information and Publicity (MIP) on April 18, 2026, the NSCN/GPRN identified the victims as Chinaoshang Shokwungnao of Tashar village and Yaruingam Vashum of Kharasom CC village. The two were reportedly shot dead near Yaolen Kuki village while travelling as commuters.
The NSCN-IM alleged that Kuki armed groups operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangement were responsible for the attack, and claimed that their actions have “exceeded all tolerance limits.”
It further alleged that such Kuki armed groups are being sheltered by Indian security forces, and claimed that the situation reflects a breakdown of law and order.
The group also claimed that there are growing reports of collusion between security forces and Kuki armed groups, accusing them of attempting to destabilise the region.
Stating that the incident could further escalate tensions, the NSCN-IM warned that Nagas may be compelled to take “defensive measures” to protect their land and people.
It then called for an immediate, independent and transparent investigation into the incident, while condemning the killing of the two civilians.
