SENAPATI: Senapati district on Friday observed World Mental Health Day under the theme “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies” at Mount Everest College (Autonomous), Senapati. The programme was organised by the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), District Health Society, Senapati, in collaboration with Mount Everest College.
Deputy commissioner of Senapati, Dharun Kumar S, IAS, attended the programme as the chief guest, while chief medical officer Dr. Sumpi Percy presided over the event.
Delivering the welcome address, Principal Dr. Laishram Vijaya Devi urged people to break the stigma surrounding mental health.
“Let us use this day to break down stereotypes, break down mental pressure and talk about it. Let us walk together to ensure that no one in our community has to fight mental health in the dark,” she said.

In the keynote address, Dr. Ngouniba Peter, district nodal officer, District Mental Health Programme, described mental stress as “the quiet storm inside our mind” and reminded participants that “It is okay to not be okay,” encouraging people to seek help without fear or shame.
Addressing the gathering, deputy commissioner Dharun Kumar S stressed the importance of self-care, empathy and emotional support.
“When we are overburdened, we should take time to recharge and restart. We should know our minds, be kinder, avoid judging others, and say, ‘I’m here for you.’ Whenever you feel overwhelmed, reach out to the person nearest to you, your friend, family, brother or sister,” he said.
Speaking at the programme, chief medical officer Dr. Sumpi Percy highlighted the importance of mental health and called for greater awareness and timely support for those facing mental health challenges.
