SHILLONG, May 25: Sohra’s Dympep will host the Northeast’s first skywalk, with 20 per cent of the Rs 51 crore project already completed since work began last November, National People’s Party legislator Gavin Miguel Mylliem said today.

The 40-metre-long skywalk is expected to be completed by late 2027 and is aimed at boosting tourist footfall in Dympep and adjoining areas.

Mylliem said work on the project began in November last year and, according to reports from the department, the progress had reached 20 per cent so far.

Describing it as “one of its kind”, the Sohra MLA said he was confident that once completed, the project would significantly boost tourism in Dympep and nearby areas.

He said the skywalk would be among the first of its kind in the Northeast and expressed confidence that it would attract a large number of tourists to the region.

Mylliem also said the Nohkalikai tourism project under the PM-DevINE scheme received sanction in November last year. The project, estimated at around Rs 38 crore, has completed the tendering process and work is expected to begin shortly.

He said the project had already been allotted to a contractor and work would commence within the next few days.

On concerns regarding ecological impact, Mylliem said environmental safeguards had been incorporated during the planning stage.

He said consultants preparing the detailed project report had taken environmental considerations into account, adding that such schemes ensure environmental aspects are properly addressed and are not expected to have any adverse impact.
