IMPHAL, May 25: The Indigenous Foundation organised the 43rd International AIDS Memorial Day-cum-Legal Awareness Programme at Amity Hall on May 29, 2025, under the sponsorship of the Manipur State Legal Services Authority.
The programme aimed to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS, honour those who lost their lives to the disease, and promote legal awareness and social support for people living with HIV/AIDS. Around 120 participants, including HIV patients, community members, dignitaries, and well-wishers attended the event.
The event was hosted by Cecilia Zimik. Attendees included Chief Guest Smt. Joybala Yumnam, Guest of Honour Shri Rangnamei Rang Peter, IAS, Director of Tribal Affairs and Hills, along with special invitees Thounaojam Strela Luwang, former Miss Manipur, Shri Hanson Irom, Mr. Planet World 2025 and Rubaru Mr. India Asia Pacific 2025, and Athokpam Disti Devi.
Athokpam Disti Devi, 1st Runner-Up of Miss Shirui Lily 2025, delivered the welcome address, expressing gratitude for being part of the programme. Bouquets and traditional shawls were presented to the dignitaries as a mark of respect.
A candle-lighting ceremony and silent prayer were held in memory of those who succumbed to HIV/AIDS, creating a solemn atmosphere of reflection and solidarity.

Delivering the keynote address, AC Raising stressed the need for awareness, compassion, and collective responsibility towards people living with HIV/AIDS. He urged authorities to strengthen legal initiatives and welfare interventions for HIV-affected individuals and families, while also calling on society to end the stigma attached to HIV patients.
One of the emotional highlights of the programme was a testimony by Wonchung Jajo, Secretary of the Christian Network Positive Organization (CNPO), who spoke about the hardships faced by HIV-positive individuals, including poverty, food insecurity, and lack of stable livelihoods. She said many survive through weaving, tailoring, candle-making, soap-making, and other small-scale activities.
She also thanked Smt. Joybala Yumnam for her support towards HIV-affected communities and appealed for continued government assistance and welfare programmes.
In his address, Shri Rangnamei Rang Peter encouraged affected individuals to remain hopeful and resilient despite hardships. Chief Guest Smt. Joybala Yumnam assured continued support for the welfare of people living with HIV/AIDS and highlighted that advancements in science, technology, and Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) have enabled many to lead long and healthy lives.
Thounaojam Strela Luwang and Hanson Irom also shared messages of encouragement and solidarity, urging HIV-positive individuals not to lose hope.
The legal awareness session was conducted by Advocate Worchanphy Kasar, who spoke on the legal rights, dignity, and protection of HIV-positive individuals, stressing the importance of combating discrimination and social exclusion.
The programme also included a group discussion where participants shared experiences and suggestions on building a more compassionate and supportive society. Refreshments were served following the event.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Wungnaothan Chithung of the Organising Committee, who thanked all dignitaries, organisers, and participants for making the event meaningful and successful.
