Imphal: Photos of defaced Churachandpur Medical College sign board at IB Raod has surfaced on the internet. Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah during his visit in January 2023 had inaugurated the first ever medical college in the hill district of Manipur.
In a similar incident during June, a Zomi community residential locality within Imphal jurisdiction which used to be called Paite Veng before the ethnic violence in Imphal’s Sangaiprou was renamed to Kwakeithel Ningthemkol, raising hue and cry from the Kuki-Zo community.

In response to the Manipur Government’s request in view of the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur during June 2023, the National Medical Commission, NMC (Undergraduate Medical Education Board) vide letter No. U. 15029/28/2023 UGMEB dated 12th June, 2023 had permitted conduction of classes (offline) for 1st year MBBS students of Churachandpur Medical College at both Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal and Churachandpur Medical College, Churachandpur until situation in Manipur return to normalcy.
It may be mentioned that Churachandpur Medical College which has 100 MBBS seats as approved by the Medical Council of India, MCI in 2022, as well as the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) are both state government run medical colleges, while Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) is a medical college managed by central government.
Meanwhile, according to TOI news report, 21 out of the 100 MBBS berths in CMC have not found takers even after the second round of counselling for this academic session. The report added that classes for the second MBBS batch are due to start from September saw only three students enrolling from the all India quota.
It also worth noting that Manipur government is mulling to upgrade the Thoubal District Hospital to a medical college.
