UKHRUL, April 23: Thousands of residents from across Ukhrul district took to the streets today for a “Solidarity March cum Candlelight Vigil.” The event was organized by Tangkhul Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to honor the memory of S.W. Chinaoshang and Yaruingam Vashum, two Tangkhul Naga civilians who were killed in an ambush on April 18 at NH 202.

The march commenced from two separate meeting points: the Mini Secretariat and Awontang converging at the Ukhrul Headquarters Ground.

Addressing the massive gathering at the candle light vigil, Ramreichan Ningshen, President of the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) stated, “These deaths have brought not only the Tangkhuls together but the Nagas beyond,”

“We did not choose to be a Naga, but God chose us with a purpose… Our purpose is to be the people of Christ.”

He specifically lauded the presence of mothers in the crowd, noting that their constant love that continues to keep the community on the right path during times of extreme trial.

Message sent by Ng. Lorho, President of the United Naga Council (UNC) characterized the April 18th incident near T.M. Kasom as a cold, orchestrated ambush rather than a casualty of war.

Lorho directed sharp criticism toward the Government of India, questioning the efficacy of central security forces and the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.

Lorho argued that the silence of those who must protect us is louder than gunfire, suggesting complicity through inaction if armed groups continue to move freely.

He emphasized that the three-day mourning period observed across Naga areas serves as a reminder that Naga identity transcends state and international borders.

Addressing the Kuki community, Lorho clarified that the current suspension of ties is a traditional form of grief and mourning, not an act of hatred, while firmly stating that Naga patience should not be mistaken for weakness.

As the sun set over Ukhrul, the HQ Ground was illuminated by thousands of Zarmei (traditional torch). The vigil served as a symbolic promise that the victims would not become mere statistics.

The proceedings concluded with the rhythmic cry of “Kuknalim” echoing a shared hope for a peace rooted in dignity and the protection of Naga lives on their own soil.

The three-day mourning period called by the UNC concluded with these vigils, which are being mirrored in other district headquarters across Manipur and Nagaland.
