Tripura: Reang Community Seeks Recognition for Kau Bru Language, Hojagiri Day Holiday

Agartala: Tripura’s Power and Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath assured the Reang community that the state government is committed to addressing their demands for official recognition of their mother tongue “Kau Bru” and the declaration of Hojagiri Day as a government holiday.

Following these demands, several public representatives, artists, writers, and intellectuals from the Reang community, led by the Shantirbazar Assembly Constituency MLA Pramod Reang, organized a meeting on Saturday at the Tripura Forest Development & Plantation Corporation Limited’s (TFDPC) Conference hall here in Agartala near Circuit House.

While speaking with the media persons Minister Nath said, “A special committee has already been formed to work on the development of the Kau Bru language. The government is taking all necessary steps to preserve and promote linguistic diversity in Tripura.”  

“The Reang community has been seeking official recognition for Kau Bru, which is integral to their identity and they have also requested a government holiday on Hojagiri Day and the state and central government have been committed to supporting the development of every language in the state,” Nath added. 

Meanwhile, a memorandum outlining the demands was submitted to the Chief Minister during the meeting. Minister Nath reiterated the government’s inclusive approach toward the preservation of languages and cultures in Tripura.

He said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been emphasizing the importance of mother tongues, and our government in Tripura is following that vision. Former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and current Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha are determined to ensure that no language in the state is allowed to fade away.” 

The Minister highlighted that communities such as the Debbarma, Tripuri, Reang, Jamatia, Noatia, Koloi, and Murasing primarily speak Kokborok. He appreciated their collective efforts to preserve their linguistic heritage and expressed optimism about fulfilling the Reang community’s demands. 

“The Reang community’s aspirations are being carefully considered and I am hopeful that their demands will be met soon,” said Nath.
