New Delhi, November 17: The 2024 edition of the North East Festival (NEF) wrapped up on November 17, 2024, at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in Delhi, marking the conclusion of three days filled with vibrant celebrations of the Northeast’s cultural, artistic, and economic potential. The festival, presented by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of DoNER, Government of India, drew thousands of attendees, showcasing the region’s unique blend of tradition and modernity.

The closing ceremony was graced by a host of dignitaries, including Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister of Culture, and Temjen Imna, Minister of Tourism, Nagaland, among others. Their participation highlighted the growing importance of the Northeast in India’s national and global discourse.

Speaking at the event, Sonowal emphasized the region’s transformative role in India’s future, aligning it with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of the Northeast as the “Ashtalakshmi” — a symbol of prosperity. “The North East Festival complements PM Modi’s vision,” Sonowal said, “showcasing the beauty, traditions, and emerging opportunities in tourism, infrastructure, and connectivity of Assam and the other seven states. With advanced roadways, airports, and seamless connectivity, the Northeast is becoming a hub for tourists, investors, and cultural enthusiasts.”

The festival provided a platform for the Northeast to shine not only as a cultural treasure trove but also as a growing economic hub. “This festival is about much more than culture,” said Shyamkanu Mahanta, Chief Organiser of NEF. “It celebrates diversity, talent, and the vast potential for collaboration, creating long-term partnerships and driving investments into the region.”

The final day was nothing short of spectacular, featuring an eclectic mix of performances. Internationally renowned artists such as Bipul Chettri and Neel Akash took the stage, while the much-anticipated Battle of the Bands showcased up-and-coming musical talent from across the region. The festival’s high-energy hip-hop dance mega-event and fashion shows, which blended traditional textiles with contemporary designs, captured the imagination of attendees.

Additionally, the festival saw the success of B2B tourism meetings aimed at increasing collaboration between Northeast tour operators and stakeholders from across India. Handloom and handicraft stalls displayed intricate local textiles and eco-friendly products, while the food zone offered everything from Delhi street snacks to fiery Bhut Jolokia and smoked meat dishes.

Among the highlights were the NEF Achievement Awards, presented to notable figures including actor Adil Hussain and Larsing Ming Soyan, MD of Centre Point Group Enterprises, and Rattan Sharma, Chairman of the Satyam Group. The NEF Media Award was also conferred to distinguished journalists Arunim Bhuyan, Reema Sharma, and Huidrom Athauba Meite for their invaluable contributions to promoting the Northeast’s story.

For many entrepreneurs, the festival was not just a celebration but an opportunity to connect and grow. Dibrugarh-based entrepreneur Elvena Achumi shared, “This festival promotes youth and women entrepreneurs. I saw a great response to my handloom items like shawls and silk sarees, and I am thrilled with the result.” Similarly, cloud kitchen owner Indusmita Saikia said, “This event has given me the confidence to pursue my dream of opening a café in Delhi.”

The North East Festival 2024 will be remembered not only for its vibrant cultural offerings but also for the new pathways it created in connecting the Northeast with the rest of India and the world. As the region continues to gain economic and cultural prominence, festivals like NEF play a crucial role in shaping its future.
