Ukhrul Mourns Passing of Ex-Hunphun Headman HA Wungrampan

Ukhrul, September 22: The final funeral ceremony of former Hunphun Headman HA Wungrampan was held today at Mission Ground, Alungtang, Ukhrul, drawing over 1000 mourners from across Ukhrul District and beyond. HA Wungrampan, as headman from 2008 to 2018, was celebrated for his bold leadership, peaceful nature, and commitment to community unity. He passed away at the age of 39 on Monday, leaving behind a legacy that resonated deeply within the Tangkhul community.

Mourners from Ukhrul town and surrounding villages arrived at Mission Ground to pay their final respects to the late leader. The atmosphere was one of solemn remembrance, punctuated by heartfelt speeches and tributes. For those unable to attend, condolences poured in through messages and social media platforms, underscoring the profound impact HA Wungrampan had throughout Ukhrul District.

The funeral featured moving addresses from community and political leaders. Sword Vashum, President of Tangkhul Naga Long, the apex Tangkhul body, challenged attendees to reflect on HA Wungrampan’s life and legacy. Sword Vashum said, “Amei Wungrampan, not as physically abled as all of us, still took up his responsibilities vigilantly. His story compels us to consider how we, as abled individuals, bring change and benefit to society.” His message inspired self-reflection among those gathered, urging the community to continue striving for positive impact and unity.

Ram Muivah, Retd. IAS and MLA of 44 A/C, sent his condolence message highlighting HA Wungrampan’s dedication to fair leadership and peaceful coexistence: “His passing is not a great loss for his family alone but for the community,” remarked Ram Muivah, recalling Wungrampan’s appointment as headman at a notably young age and his unwavering commitment to equitable administration.

HA Khayaiwo, the current headman and younger brother of the late leader, delivered an emotional vote of thanks. He expressed satisfaction with the ceremony, remarking that the gathering felt as significant as a wedding celebration, and shared his hope for continued unity and togetherness even beyond this difficult moment. He welcomed those present to future family milestones, emphasizing gratitude and kinship: “Thank you to everyone who came and attended the funeral ceremony,” he said.

During his tenure, HA Wungrampan was instrumental in forming the Watershed Development Committee, a key initiative for local environmental stewardship and sustainable development. He was also a founding member of the New Life Club, an organization focused on encouraging foundational roles for men in society. Testimonials at the ceremony described him as peace-loving, empathetic, and deeply invested in uplifting those in need. His dedication to fostering unity and positive change has left an indelible mark on Hunphun/Ukhrul and the wider Tangkhul community.

The funeral was attended not only by immediate family and citizens of Ukhrul/Hunphun but also by descendants from Ngaingawo, Mahakwo, and Theiva villages, demonstrating the breadth of respect and admiration for the late headman across generations and geographical boundaries. Tangkhul Naga Wungnao Long, Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong, Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long, Tangkhul Shanao Long and many other unions came and paid their respects to the late leader.
