Senapati: The Presidential Council meeting of the United Naga Council (UNC), the apex body of the Nagas in Manipur on Friday issued a warning to launch strong democratic agitations if their demands are not met promptly.

This decision was made during an emergency meeting of the UNC Presidential Council, which included senior leaders from the UNC, All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Naga Women’s Union (NWU), Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights-South (NPMHR-S), intellectuals, and social activists. They discussed the emerging socio-political conditions in Manipur.

After crucial discussions, the emergency meeting decided to launch a strong democratic agitation due to the failure to address the demand to roll back the newly created seven districts, despite a series of tripartite talks involving the Union Home Ministry, State Government, and the UNC.

The meeting also deliberated on the failure to deport illegal immigrants and refugees from Myanmar, who have been sheltered for many months in and around Kamjong and Tengnoupal Naga areas. The UNC had earlier submitted a memorandum to the State Government and the Union Home Ministry, but no positive response has been received to date, which has caused frustration among the Naga civil bodies.

The Presidential Council meeting on Friday discussed launching a strong democratic agitation if their demands are not met. Sources from the UNC indicated that the next course of action could occur anytime in the near future.
