Violence Erupts in Manipur’s Kakching Over Detention of Four; Injuries Reported

Ukhrul: Residents of Kakching erupted in protest Wednesday night, demanding the release of four individuals arrested in connection with the recent mob attack on the residence of Kakching MLA M.Rameshwar after the Jirbam Killings. The unrest, which began around 7PM, escalated as protesters clashed with police, leaving at least two VDF personnel and one protester injured.

The protesters, from various localities, initially gathered near the MLA’s residence, demanding the unconditional release of the detained individuals. Kakching District Police deployed additional forces by 9 PM to disperse the crowd. However, after being pushed back from the MLA’s residence, the protestors marched towards Kakching Police Station, intensifying the confrontation.

The clash turned violent as protesters pelted stones at police personnel and vehicles, prompting the use of tear gas and rubber bullets to control the situation. One protester sustained injuries and was admitted to Kakching Community Health Centre. The injured VDF personnel were admitted to Kakching Ima Hospital. Police detained eight protesters during the standoff.

The confrontation, which lasted until midnight, caused damage to police vehicles and heightened tensions in the area. Authorities report that the situation is now under control.
