SHILLONG: The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) has reiterated its commitment to push for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
“Yes, for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule, the VPP will continue to fight for this,” VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said on Wednesday.
He emphasised that the Khasi language is on par with other regional languages already included in the Eighth Schedule and questioned the central government’s stance on its inclusion.
“If you compare the Khasi language with other languages from the region that have been included, the Khasi language is not lacking behind, but we do not know what is in the mind of the central government,” Myrboh stated.
He added that Mizoram’s Mizo language, which is widely used as an official language, is yet to be included in the Eighth Schedule, highlighting what he described as an inconsistency in the government’s approach.

Myrboh refrained from commenting on the state government’s efforts, stating that the demand has been long-standing, even before the present administration.
“With regard to the efforts of the state government, I cannot say because this has been a long demand from the Congress governments in the past and even this government,” he said.
