UKHRUL: The Zingsho Katamnao Long (ZKL), the apex student body of the Eastern Tangkhul community, has strongly objected to a press communiqué issued by the Chassad Youth Club (CYC) regarding the firing incident that occurred in the Chassad-Kamjong area at around 8:30 pm on Monday.

In a statement, ZKL alleged that the communiqué released by CYC was “manipulated” and falsely attributed the incident to Tangkhul militants. The organisation asserted that it is an “established fact” that Kuki armed groups were involved in multiple rounds of gunfire using sophisticated weapons. It described the CYC’s claims as “fabricated” and an affront to the Tangkhul Naga community, stating that such assertions are unacceptable.

ZKL has demanded that the CYC to withdraw its statement and issue an unconditional apology to the Tangkhul Naga community within 24 hours, effective from midnight of March 24. It further warned that failure to comply would lead to “appropriate counter-measures” against Kukis residing within the jurisdiction of the ZKL.

Meanwhile, the organisation also raised strong objection to a disarmament order issued by the District Magistrate of Kamjong under the Arms Act, 1959, directing all licensed arms holders in the Kamjong sub-division to surrender their weapons at the nearest police station.

ZKL termed the order “illogical” and “uncalled for,” citing the prevailing security situation in the region. It stated that civilians from the Tangkhul Naga community have been relying on licensed firearms for protection amid continued threats from armed Kuki groups.

The student body further alleged that both State and Central security forces have failed to maintain law and order in the area. It urged the government to take concrete measures to restore normalcy, including the seizure of illegal arms and ensuring that armed groups remain confined to designated camps.
