Assam Rifles refutes allegation surrounding Hongbei episode; Tangkhul Union says it will halt AR movement under its jurisdiction

Ukhrul, Jan 12: The Assam Rifles in a clarification to Ukhrul Times has strongly refuted allegations surrounding Hongbei village incident in Kamjong District, where an Assam Rifles makeshift camp was destroyed by a mob.

The Assam Rifles while strongly refuting the allegations of harassment and restrictions by the residents of Kasom Khullen Block, as stated in the news article, Kasom Khullen Residents Storm Assam Rifles Makeshift Camp in Hongbei Over Alleged Harassment and Restrictions, clarified that the “Assam Rifles personnel on January 11, manning the post at Hongbei, inspected a vehicle and discerned that the vehicle loaded with timber did not have mandated documents. Following procedures, Assam Rifles personnel stopped the vehicle.”

The Assam Rifles also revealed that “Nefarious elements instigated the local population to force Assam Rifles personnel to let the vehicles be released.”

The clarification further maintained that “the crowd turned violent and Assam Rifles personnel used appropriate and calibrated response.”

It also added that senior officials from Assam Rifles are in discussion with the administration to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, reacting to Saturday’s incident, the Tangkhul Naga Aze Longphang (Southern Tangkhul Naga Union) announced in a public notice on Sunday that it had reached two resolutions during an emergency meeting:

1. That, the Village Authority, Shanao Long (Women Union) and the Youths in connection with the prevailing situation are advised to halt movement of the Assam Rifles under their jurisdiction.

2. That, until their chapter of demands are fulfilled, all the Village Authority, Shanao Long (Women Union) and the Youths will unite in the matter.
