NEW DELHI: The Republic of the Philippines celebrated the 128th anniversary of its Proclamation of Independence at the Hyatt Regency in New Delhi on June 12, with leaders from both countries highlighting the growing strength of bilateral ties.
Speaking as the chief guest, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth underscored the increasing convergence between India and the Philippines in the geopolitical, economic, and security spheres. He emphasized their shared commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.
The Proclamation of Independence marked the Philippines’ emergence as Asia’s first constitutional republic and laid the foundation for its role as a responsible member of the international community. This year, the country also holds the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). India and the Philippines have shared diplomatic relations for 77 years.

In his address, Philippine Ambassador Josel F. Ignacio stressed the importance of collective action and the need to “navigate our future together.” He noted that bilateral trade between the two countries is approaching US$4 billion and highlighted the strengthening of people-to-people ties through the introduction of visa-free entry for Indian nationals and the resumption of direct flights between Delhi and Manila.
The ambassador recalled that relations between the two countries were elevated to a Strategic Partnership during Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s visit to India in August 2025.
“In this 128th year, we take pride in what we have become and what we are becoming. The Philippines is among the fastest-growing economies in Asia and the ASEAN community, and a responsible member of the family of nations,” Ambassador Ignacio said. “In a rapidly changing global environment, no country can move forward alone.”
He identified three key pillars for future cooperation: peace and security, prosperity corridors, and people empowerment. Describing the Philippines as a modern and dynamic market economy, he emphasized that the country’s progress is strengthened by international partnerships and cooperation.
