Calls Grow to Vacate Tribal Girls’ Hostel in Imphal

Imphal, September 27: Two tribal student organisations have extended their support to the ultimatum served by the Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM), demanding the removal of para-military forces from the Tribal Girls’ Hostel in Imphal within 15 days.

The Zeme Students’ Organisation Manipur (ZSOM) and the All Inpui Students’ Union (AISU) issued separate press releases endorsing the ultimatum, calling the continued occupation of the hostel a violation of the rights of tribal students pursuing their studies in the state capital.

Both organisations pointed out that the displacement has forced many tribal girl students from remote areas to stay in rented houses in Imphal, incurring heavy expenses. Parents, they added, are struggling to bear the cost of accommodation and education while also sustaining their families through farming and paddy cultivation.

Describing the occupation as “a total suppression and violation of rights,” ZSOM President Haizerangbe Paul stated that the organisation would extend “full moral and physical support to any movement towards the tribal cause.”

In its release, AISU also expressed similar concerns and pledged full support to the tribal cause, aligning itself with TYCM’s demand for the hostel to be vacated.

The ultimatum served by TYCM gives the government 15 days to act on the issue, with support now widening among tribal student bodies in the state.
