International Tiger Day 2021 was celebrated at Tamenglong headquarters on Thursday. The program was attended by Awangbow Newmai Hon’ble Minister Forest Environment and Climate Change Government of Manipur, Rainforest Club Tamenglong, Corbett Foundation and village authority members, Namsinrei Panmei, Chairman ADC Tamenglong, Kh Hitler Singh DFO Tamenglong and Shri Nehemiah Panmei Hony Wildlife Warden Tamenglong as Chief Guest, President and Guests of Honor.

International Tiger Day is celebrated each year on July 29 to raise awareness about the conservation of the wild tiger as per the resolution of countries to increase the wild tiger into double the numbers by 2022 in a submit held at Saint Petersburg, Russia in 2010.

Chief Guest, Awangbow Newmai said that tiger is the most important carnivorous animals in the food chain system and utmost important component of the eco system. Project Tiger scheme should be extended to the Tamenglong Forest Division. Tamenglong certainly has a tiger habitat as there were record of nine tigers found killed in different seasons prior to 2010. If these were migratory tigers, the killing of tigers could had happened in a particular season, he noted. Hon’ble Minister and other speakers opined the vast potential of Forest and Wildlife found in the district.

Nehemiah Panmei Hony Wildlife Warden appealed for creating a new wildlife Division Office solely for Tamenglong District. DFO Tamenglong Kh Hitler Singh appealed to strengthen the staff strength of Tamenglong Forest Division especially for Tamei Range which is said is under staffed. DFO Tamenglong also submitted photographs collected by the camera traps of rare wild animals found in Kuilong part II. Thursday’s program was jointly organised by Tamenglong Forest Division, Rainforest club Tamenglong and Corbett Foundation, Tamenglong.

The theme for the 2021 International Tiger Day is “Their survival is in our hands”. India accounts for nearly 70% of the world’s total tiger population and has already achieved the target of doubling its numbers.
